People are scarce in the job market; when they are available, companies vie for them and try to offer them better and better conditions. Thanks to modern technologies and the convergence of fields, the job market is changing, and the problem for companies is that they fail to respond to these changes. As a result, they find that their employees leave for better opportunities, and they are then unable to find replacements. Most companies are still preoccupied with the question of why their products aren’t good enough for their customers and are constantly trying to come up with something new. However, most companies are making a mistake here because they often fail to realize that the biggest problem is actually their employees. Or rather, they realize that they need to start with corporate culture and employee satisfaction.Once companies recognize the need for change, they typically implement the following measures:· benefits· pay raises· meal vouchers· relaxation areas But nowadays, when everything is moving so fast and, in general, everything is readily available in our economy, the situation is such that these perks are no longer effective as motivators. So what does work, and how can you retain employees or discourage them from leaving?· First and foremost, employees must feel that their employer is truly a good one. If there’s high turnover, employees don’t trust their employer and are therefore stressed from the start, preparing for a change. As a result, they’ll jump at any other offer or won’t perform as well as they could if they actually viewed their employer as a good one!· Employees must feel that they’re doing work that matters. If someone spends all day writing articles for the internet and doesn’t know whether they’re any good or if anyone is reading them, they’ll gradually lose interest. If someone spends all day poring over spreadsheets and doesn’t know what practical (rather than theoretical) purpose they serve, they’ll certainly lose interest as well. The result is that they’ll leave for more meaningful work, even if it pays less.· Employees need to know that their work is helping them grow and that they’re also advancing within the company. If you don’t motivate your employee by giving them more and more responsibility, if you don’t show them that they have a chance to advance, and if you don’t constantly prepare them for such opportunities, they’ll surely soon realize that they aren’t actually needed and that someone else could do their job.· A hard worker must have the kind of work environment they need—whether that’s a home office or an external workspace. If you place someone who needs quiet to work in an open-plan office, they certainly won’t be happy or comfortable there, and they won’t perform their job well. Then it may happen that they’ll leave to work somewhere with a small office where they’ll have peace and quiet, even though they’ll earn much less money and receive fewer benefits.
